Punk-O-Rama is a series of compilations by Epitaph Records featuring bands from Epitaph and its sub-labels, Hellcat Records and Burning Heart Records. First released in 1994, they were released every year, with the exception of 1995 and 1997 up until 2005, when the final volume was released.
Despite its name, the Punk-O-Rama collections have showcased music beyond the punk genre. While that was its original intention, once Epitaph started expanding its roster to other genres the series started to reflect this. Indie rock and hip-hop tracks started to appear, with examples on Volume 4: Tom Waits' "Big in Japan", and Volumes 8-10, including tracks by Sage Francis, Atmosphere, and Eyedea & Abilities. The only band to appear on every album in the series is Pennywise and Rancid, while three bands were on all but one album in the series, with Bad Religion on all but Volume 5, NOFX on all but Volume 9 and Pulley on all but Volume 1
The basis of the compilations was to promote the bands on the Epitaph labels, and as such, the suggested retail prices of the releases were usually half the price of other new releases, averaging well under $10. The songs featured on the compilations were both previously released on Epitaph labels and previously unreleased material. A few times, Epitaph also put on tours under the Punk-O-Rama name. Bands that have appeared on these tours included bands that appeared on the compilations, such as Guttermouth, Millencolin and The Distillers.
Hellcat Records, a subsidiary of Epitaph, started its own compilation series in 1997 called Give 'Em the Boot. Some bands would appear on this series as well as Punk-O-Rama, since they both include Hellcat Records bands.
A promotional version of the series — Punk-O-Rama 2.1 — was given away in 1997 with pairs of Vans shoes at select shoe stores. This album was similar to Volume 2, with some song exceptions. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Poison Idea, and TSOL were replaced with Hepcat - Bobby & Joe, H2O - Family Tree, and Ten Foot Pole - Regret. Pennywise, SNFU, and Down By Law have different songs featured as well.
A DVD was released under the Punk-O-Rama name in 2003. The DVD featured music videos that were made throughout Epitaph's history. Although the title indicated it was Volume 1, no other DVDs were released in the series. The next year, however, the Punk-O-Rama CD included a bonus DVD, which featured current music videos for Epitaph artists, most of which appeared on both the CD and DVD. The same was done for the following, and last, entry in the series.
Epitaph Records finally retired the Punk-O-Rama series of compilations in 2006, replacing it with the Unsound series, which had its first release in June, 2006.
Epitaph had come under criticism from long time fans of the Punk-O-Rama series, some of whom claimed that the name 'Punk-O-Rama' had become misleading, as the more recent releases in the series (particularly volumes 9 & 10) included emo, screamo, hardcore, indie rock and most controversially, hip hop. The new, non genre-specific name, Unsound was chosen to allow Epitaph to include a wider variety of music in the series.
Punk-O-Rama is the first compilation released in the Punk-O-Rama series.
This is the only entry in the series not to include a song by Pulley, although it does have a song by Ten Foot Pole (now Pulley). Also, this is the only entry to include more than one song by the same band on the CD (however Bad Religion have one song on each of the two CDs that make up Punk-O-Rama Vol. 8). Rancid, NOFX, The Offspring, and Pennywise all have two songs on this album.

Punk-O-Rama Vol.1
Punk-O-Rama Vol. 2 is the second compilation in the Punk-O-Rama series. This was the first entry to be released at a low price, so that it was more appealing for someone to buy to check out Epitaph's artists.
All of the songs were previously released with the exception of DFL's "Thought Control". Me First and the Gimme Gimmes' cover of Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young" made its CD debut here, as it was previously only available on Billy, a vinyl single released by the band.

Punk-O-Rama III is the third compilation album in the Punk-O-Rama series.
This entry features two previously unreleased tracks, "We Threw Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps for Arms and No Eyebrows" by NOFX and "Wake Up" by Pennywise. NOFX's track was later released on their rarities compilation 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records. The European version has Undeclinable Ambuscade's track "7 years" and takes off "lozin must" by millencolin.

Punk-O-Rama 4: Straight Outta the Pit is the fourth compilation album in the Punk-O-Rama series. This is the only entry to have a sub-title.

Punk-O-Rama Vol. 5 is the fifth compilation album in the Punk-O-Rama series.
All of the tracks were previously released except for "Pump Up the Valuum" by NOFX and "Problematic" by All. The latter two tracks were title tracks left off the band's current albums at the time, NOFX's Pump Up the Valuum and ALL's Problematic. Also, NOFX's track was later released on the rarities compilation album 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records.
"Secure Horizons" by Guttermouth was later rerecorded on their Covered With Ants record.
"Good Rats" by Dropkick Murphys was later rerecorded on their Sing Loud Sing Proud record.
The Rancid song "Poison" was a demo version of the song off their Rancid 5 record.
This is the only entry in the series not to include a song by Bad Religion.

Punk-O-Rama Vol.5
Punk-O-Rama Vol. 6 is the sixth compilation album in the Punk-O-Rama series.
The cover is a reference to a scene in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, as this was the release from the year 2001.
The US release of Punk-O-Rama Vol. 6 included a total of five previously unreleased tracks. The unreleased tracks are "Blackeye" by Millencolin (US only), "We're Desperate" by Pennywise, "Original Me" by Descendents, "Let Me In" by Beatsteaks and "Bath of Least Resistance" by NOFX. Pennywise perform "We're Desperate" with Exene Cervenka, who is from X which is the band that originally performed the song. "Original Me" by Descendants was originally performed by ALL, which is interesting as those two bands share ¾ of their members. "Bath of Least Resistance" by NOFX was later released on their rarities compilation 45 or 46 Songs That Weren't Good Enough to Go on Our Other Records. "Blackeye" by Millencolin was later released in their album Home from Home, and was the only previously unreleased track to not appear on the UK release of Punk-O-Rama Vol. 6.

This is the only entry in the series to be a two-disc by containing two CDs. The entries following this had two discs, but they were one CD and one DVD.
The song "Quick Death" is on here in two different forms. The first is the original by Transplants, and the latter is a remix of that track by Error.
The opening credits of Seasons 4 and 5 of the popular Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation prominently feature Punk-O-Rama 8 posters in several shots.
